By taking the place of the opioids used by patients, buprenorphine prevents cravings and makes withdrawal from opioids feel less intense. This medication binds to receptors in the brain and prevents patients from feeling any pleasant effects from opioids or alcohol. Vivitrol may also be used by patients who have completely tapered off of buprenorphine or methadone to prevent relapse.
