Medication-Assisted Treatment
Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine is a medication that comes in film, tablet or injectable form. By taking the place of the opioids used by patients, buprenorphine prevents cravings and makes withdrawal from opioids feel less intense. Patients on buprenorphine report feeling normal, functional and clear-headed all day long, which allows them to make positive choices the way that they did prior to their addiction. When combined with counseling and other forms of support, buprenorphine can be highly effective in helping patients recover from addiction. Square Medical Group provides buprenorphine treatment through:
- Suboxone
- Subutex
- Sublocade
Vivitrol
Naltrexone is a monthly injectable medication that is useful for the treatment of opioid addiction and alcohol addiction. This medication binds to receptors in the brain and prevents patients from feeling any pleasant effects from opioids or alcohol. Vivitrol has been clinically proven to reduce the probability of relapse. Those suffering from an opioid addiction may only start taking Vivitrol after opioid detoxification. Vivitrol may also be used by patients who have completely tapered off of buprenorphine or methadone to prevent relapse.

Individual Therapy
The least intensive level of care is a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with an individual therapist and/or with a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner for medication. Our therapists are trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma Informed Care as well as other evidence based practices to optimize treatment of substance use and co-occurring disorder. Our prescribers are trained and experienced in the treatment of substance use and co-occurring disorders.
Group Therapy
For people looking to maintain their recovery, or wish to focus their treatment on a specific topic, SMG offers a number of outpatient groups. These groups meet once a week for an hour and can also be combined with individual therapy and medication assisted therapy as described above. Examples of groups include: Relapse Prevention, Grief Management, Healthy Relationships, Family Support.
Intensive Outpatient
The next level of care is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Square Medical Group offers two IOP’s: a day program on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 AM-12:30 PM and an evening program from 5:30-8:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The IOP is also a group program that provides similar opportunities to those listed above in the PHP. IOP participation can also be combined with individual therapy and medication assisted therapy as described above in PHP.
The IOP option is a logical choice for someone who wants to strengthen their recovery, avoid a relapse or is discharging from an inpatient program and cannot make the time commitment of a PHP. The evening program is a useful alternative for people with day-time commitments such as a job, child care or school.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
Our most intensive level of service is the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Woburn Partial Hospitalization Program offers a series of groups, Monday through Friday, five hours each day. When combined with individual therapy from a member of our clinical staff and medication assisted therapy from one of our psychiatrists or nurse practitioners, it provides the most comprehensive treatment program available outside a hospital setting. Groups include: relapse prevention, anxiety and depression symptom management, trauma recovery, healthy relationships and yoga and meditation. This option is often the next step for someone discharging from an inpatient stay or for someone who is struggling with their recovery and wants to intervene before they experience a full relapse.
