Cynthia S. Carter, MD is a psycho-pharma-cologist and Certified in the practice of Psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She received her Bachelor in Science from Howard University in Washington, DC in 1984 where she majored in Psychology and minored in Chemistry. She received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988. She completed a medical internship at the Hospital of St. Raphael’s in New Haven, CT in 1989 and went on to complete her psychiatric residency at Yale University in 1992 with an emphasis on Addictions and Forensic Psychiatry. She completed a Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University in 1993.
She moved to Boston in 1993 after accepting a position at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Since moving to Boston, she has been the Director of Outpatient Addictions at what was then Boston City Hospital and was a staff psychiatrist at Harvard Vanguard Medical Center, Kenmore. She accepted a Staff Psychiatry position at Harvard University Health Services in 2000 and remains there part time. She also has an out patient clinic at Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center in Roxbury, MA. Her areas of expertise include Addictions (she is a certified in the prescription of Suboxone), the interface between Law and Psychiatry, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Eating Disorders, Women’s Issues and Cross Cultural Issues. She speaks English and Haitian Creole fluently.
